Mental Health Services

Supporting Emotional Wellness Through Connection, Nature, & Equine-Assisted Therapy

At Ridgebury Farm, Mental Health Services integrate evidence-based clinical practices with nature-based and equine-assisted therapeutic experiences to support emotional regulation, self-awareness, resilience, communication, and overall wellbeing. Sessions take place in a calm, supportive farm environment where clients are encouraged to build confidence, develop healthy coping skills, and experience meaningful connection through hands-on, experiential activities with horses and nature.

Unlike traditional office-based therapy, equine-assisted and nature-based mental health services create opportunities for growth through experience, movement, reflection, and relationship in a dynamic and engaging setting.

How It Works

Equine-Assisted Therapy

Through ground-based interactions with horses, clients engage in experiential activities that foster self-awareness, emotional regulation, communication, trust, problem-solving, boundary setting, and resilience. Horses provide immediate, honest, and nonjudgmental feedback that can help clients better understand themselves and their relationships with others.

Nature-Based Therapy

The natural environment offers calming, sensory-rich experiences that support regulation, mindfulness, emotional processing, stress reduction, and overall mental wellness through connection with nature and purposeful outdoor experiences.

Individualized Care

Sessions are facilitated by licensed mental health professionals trained in nature-based and EAGALA-informed practices. Therapy is individualized, developmentally appropriate, and designed to meet each client’s unique emotional, behavioral, and relational goals.

Clinical Perspective

Nature-based and equine-assisted mental health services are experiential therapeutic approaches that integrate evidence-based clinical practices with the healing elements of horses, movement, relationship, and the natural environment. Research increasingly supports the role of nature and animal-assisted interventions in improving emotional wellbeing, reducing stress, and enhancing resilience, self-regulation, and interpersonal functioning.

Equine-assisted therapy utilizes interactions with horses as part of the therapeutic process. Horses are highly attuned animals that respond honestly and immediately to human behavior, body language, emotional states, and energy. This creates opportunities for clients to practice self-awareness, flexibility, frustration tolerance, communication, emotional regulation, creative problem-solving, and relationship-building in real time.

Unlike traditional talk therapy models, equine-assisted mental health sessions do not rely solely on verbal processing. Clients are able to explore thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relational patterns through experiential activities and metaphor in ways that may feel safer, more engaging, and more accessible. Horses also offer opportunities for co-regulation, grounding, and connection within a nonjudgmental environment.

Nature-based therapy further supports nervous system regulation and emotional wellness by providing calming sensory input, opportunities for mindfulness and movement, reduced environmental stressors, and authentic engagement with the natural world. Research has demonstrated associations between nature-based interventions and improvements in mood, resilience, cognition, restoration, stress reduction, anxiety, and depressive symptoms.

Emerging research on equine-assisted psychotherapy, including EAGALA-informed models, has demonstrated promising outcomes related to trauma recovery, anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, social engagement, self-esteem, and behavioral change among children, adolescents, and adults.
