Physical Therapy
Supporting Strength, Mobility, & Functional Independence Through Movement & Nature
At Ridgebury Farm, Physical Therapy integrates evidence-based therapeutic techniques with hippotherapy and nature-based experiences to support strength, balance, coordination, mobility, postural control, endurance, and functional independence. Sessions are designed to be dynamic, engaging, and individualized, utilizing the movement of the horse and the natural environment to create meaningful opportunities for growth and participation.
Through both mounted and unmounted experiences, clients are encouraged to build physical skills while also developing confidence, regulation, resilience, and connection in a motivating and supportive setting.
How It Works
Hippotherapy
Utilizing the horse’s multidimensional, rhythmic movement as a treatment tool, hippotherapy provides sensory and motor input that closely mimics the mechanics of human walking. This movement can support postural alignment, core strength, balance, coordination, gait training, endurance, and motor control in a highly engaging environment.
Nature-Based Therapy
The natural environment offers varied terrain, movement opportunities, sensory experiences, and functional challenges that encourage strength, motor planning, balance, coordination, and participation in real-world activities through exploration and purposeful movement.
Individualized Care
Each therapy session is tailored to the client’s strengths, goals, developmental needs, and interests by licensed physical therapists using a relationship-based, whole-person approach to care.
Clinical Perspective
Nature-based and equine-assisted physical therapy differ significantly from traditional clinic or school-based therapy environments. Rather than relying solely on static equipment or isolated exercises, these approaches provide dynamic, multisensory, and highly motivating therapeutic experiences that naturally encourage movement, engagement, and participation.

Hippotherapy incorporates the horse’s movement within physical therapy treatment to support functional outcomes. The horse provides repetitive, rhythmic, three-dimensional pelvic movement that closely replicates the mechanics of human gait. This continuous sensory and motor input may assist with balance, postural control, coordination, muscle activation, endurance, motor planning, and functional mobility.

Mounted and unmounted activities with the horses also create opportunities for strengthening, transitional movement, bilateral coordination, body awareness, and emotional regulation in ways that feel purposeful and engaging rather than repetitive or exercise-driven. For many clients, the relationship and connection with the horse increases motivation, confidence, participation, and willingness to attempt challenging tasks.

Nature-based therapy further enhances treatment by incorporating uneven terrain, climbing, lifting, carrying, navigating outdoor environments, and participating in meaningful “real-world” movement experiences. Outdoor sensory input may support regulation, attention, motor control, and overall nervous system organization while fostering greater engagement and carryover into daily life.

Research continues to support the therapeutic value of equine-assisted interventions across a wide range of populations. Studies have demonstrated improvements in gross motor function, gait, balance, coordination, strength, mobility, functional independence, and participation in daily activities among children and adults receiving hippotherapy and equine-assisted physical therapy interventions.
Nature-based and equine-assisted physical therapy is not simply traditional therapy in a different location — it is a dynamic, experiential, and highly engaging approach grounded in movement science, sensory integration, functional mobility, and whole-person development.
