Speech Language Pathology

Supporting Communication Through Connection, Movement, & Nature

At Ridgebury Farm, Speech and Language Therapy combines evidence-based therapeutic techniques with the movement of the horse and the calming, sensory-rich environment of the farm. Sessions are individualized to support communication, social engagement, emotional regulation, attention, and confidence through meaningful, motivating experiences both on and off the horse.

How It Works

Hippotherapy

Utilizing the horse’s gentle, rhythmic movement as a treatment tool, hippotherapy can support breath control, postural strength, motor planning, sensory regulation, attention, and communication development.

Nature-Based Therapy

The farm environment offers rich opportunities for sensory exploration, movement, emotional regulation, social engagement, and connection through interaction with nature, animals, and outdoor experiences.

Individualized Care

Each session is thoughtfully tailored to a client’s strengths, goals, and developmental needs by licensed professionals using a relationship-based, client-centered approach.

Clinical Perspective

Hippotherapy utilizes the horse’s multidimensional movement within the scope of speech and language pathology practice to support foundational skills necessary for communication and learning. The movement of the horse provides continuous sensory and neuromotor input that may assist with postural control, respiratory support for speech production, motor planning, attention, sensory processing, and nervous system regulation.

Speech and language goals are naturally incorporated into meaningful, engaging activities both mounted and unmounted. Sessions may target expressive and receptive language, articulation, phonological awareness, sequencing, executive functioning, social-pragmatic communication, comprehension, and emotional regulation through literacy activities, play, movement, and interaction with the farm environment.

Nature-based therapeutic experiences further support regulation, engagement, emotional awareness, and authentic communication opportunities through experiential interaction with the horses, farm animals, peers, therapists, and natural surroundings. The combination of equine movement, relational experiences, and outdoor sensory input creates a highly motivating and neurologically supportive therapeutic environment for many clients.
